I’m going to share with you how to cultivate those powerhouse affiliates who will have a massive impact on your bottom line. I’m talking about…
Super affiliates typically either control a great deal of traffic (or know how to) and/or have a sustainable mailing list. You probably already know who they are.
Start thinking of your dream list of people who could promote your product or service – those are the guys or gals you want on your team. But not so fast. Super affiliates are picky. They’re very selective. And they’re not anxious to take on just any old deal, for any old commission.
Fear not though, because here are a few of the most important secrets for making super affiliates take notice…
Secret #1 – Offer a good product
This should go without saying, but I’ll mention it anyway – you’ve got to have a good product that delivers (or better still – over delivers).
The real “super” affiliates demand quality. They’re in the top percentile of the world’s highest paid affiliates and I can assure you they don’t want to waste their time or their reputation on something mediocre.
Secret #2 – Web site with a high closing rate
Super affiliates won’t promote your product unless you have a web site that sells! Make sure you can show real numbers that prove your site sells. If you can’t, then you shouldn’t start your affiliate program yet. A site that doesn’t close sales will succeed at only one thing – making affiliates pissed off at you.
You’ve got to keep working on your site, testing and tweaking to get those sales numbers up before you approach super affiliates. I cannot give you a rule of thumb here because it varies depending on the product and traffic, etc.
Secret #3 – Customized promotion
Super affiliates are special and deserve special attention.
That’s why you can’t just hand them a run-of-the-mill banner you give to your other affiliates. Yes, some super affiliates, actually do want banners – but they might want them “skyscraper” size. Or perhaps some odd-shaped size.
Give them what they want. But don’t just stop there. You can let your super affiliates special offers your regular affiliates can’t make. Or maybe they want a fully customized page. No problem.
As you already know, an endorsement from a person/entity someone trusts will garner more response than a cold solicitation. That’s why for the Glazer-Kennedy newsletter affiliate program we custom create landing pages for our small, elite group of affiliates (Exhibit #5).
The other thing is super affiliates are busy. You’ve got to make it brain-dead simple and turn-key easy for them to promote you.
Secret #4 – High commissions
Now with everything else I’ve mentioned here – the name of the game for most affiliates is still how much money they can make.
It’s simply a business decision.
If they are deciding between two equally appealing offers – which one do you think they’ll go for?
That’s right the one that pays them the most. Not necessarily the highest commission because they are more interested in visitor value. (Example: If I send you 100 visitors and make $200.00 in commissions – the visitor value on this offer is $2.00.)
Remember, top affiliates have only a limited amount of space for marketing small businesses of other entrepreneurs. They’ve got so much room on their sites, so many endorsements they can run, so many emails they can send out.
I suggest you give all you can to your affiliates to help motivate them. If you get into really big traffic deals – sometimes the Super Affiliate wants over 100% of your initial sale.
Now this is simply a numbers game and you’ve got to have a back-end profit plan. There’s no way to make it up on volume in this scenario. 😉
The person who can pay out more will earn the business of more super affiliates. Plain and simple.
Secret #5 – Reward and Recognize
Even though it’s about the money with Super Affiliates – there’s still a personal relationship that you’re building. So if you can reward and recognize your affiliates – they’ll keep selling for you.
A holiday gift is a good start but I’ve also sent my top affiliates gifts on New Year’s and Thanksgiving. Those other more unusual times stand out. But it’s not just about gifts – you can also hold exciting contests and prize drawings. One of my buddies told me he’s working harder for a Home Depot gift certificate than the thousands in commissions he was earning as an affiliate.
Using these secrets you’ll be able to start drawing the attention of some Super Affiliates in your own niche. But what’s even better is these people all watch what the other Super Affiliates are doing and what offers they’re running.
If you’ve got a successful program – it’s not unusual for people to start coming out of the woodwork and approaching you. A little Dan Kennedy “Magnetic Marketing” at work.
