Lessons from Father’s Day

This past weekend I spent Father’s Day alone with my son, David.  My daughter, Gina, abandoned me on Father’s Day to go to an overnight camp…

Obviously, I jest when I say “abandoned”.  I think it’s great to watch my kids develop and go after things they want in life. (Although I did give her a hard time for ditching me on Father’s Day—in a loving and fun way of course.)

David and I had a great time. We wrestled, went for ice-cream cones and played whiffle ball. I hit a towering homerun in whiffle ball for the win—which I made sure to rub in. (I think he “let” me win since it was Father’s Day!)

I think it’s so important to have one on one time with my kids. It’s something I do on a regular basis.

So what’s the big business lesson you can learn from my Father’s Day outing?

Spend time alone working on your business.

There are business owners who work hard and think that’s all they need to do to succeed. Yes, working hard is important. BUT many business owners think “hard work” means working “in” the business instead of “on” the business.

For example, there’s the guy who owns a brick and mortar business who thinks he’s working hard to make his business better by spending all his time at his business doing daily tasks that need to be done.

But in order for him to get the highest leverage payoff, what he really needs to do is to devote time alone on a regular basis to think and plan for the growth of his business.

You might feel like you don’t have the time or the money to devote to taking a day or two off to spend alone working on your business. Which is exactly why you should. When you do, you’ll find you have more of both time and money because you’ll be able to devote focused energy on creating a business around what you want and how you want to live your life and spend your time.

This lesson made me think of a few more lessons you can learn from Father’s Day, so in honor of Father’s Day and you being the “parent” of your business, today I’m giving you popular Father’s Day quotes that I’ve “re-designed” along with five mini lessons on how to apply them to your business.

  1. Another quality post. I’m a new father of two years and it’s so great to see my son grow up. I learned something over the fathers day weekend as well. I learned that you have to make mistakes and you have to fail. But you have to do it with the persistence of a child. Every time my son falls, gets frustrated, or doesn’t he what he wants. He never gives up. He’s tries something else. He persists. Never lose that will. Encourage your children by teaching them how to get what they want. You deserve it and you owe it to them.
